Yeah! I’ll start tomorrow. I should be able to walk by tomorrow, thus bike. Yeah! I’m going to tell people about this challenge.

Heh, I’m not biking as much as I was, but I’m in. I might place in the top 50 anyway! :P

I hadn’t biked for 29 days. I didn’t realize it had been that long.

JD, leave room for me in position 50, you can move up to 49. ha

This is a nice break (oops! better not use THAT word) I mean, good chance to ease all the stress I’ve been putting on my hip with running and elliptical training.

No…no, we don’t want to hear THAT word. ha

Ya, it’s a nice change of pace, to just go as I can and not have the pressure of trying to be first. Although as you can see, I’m not against a challenge to try to come in first. :-)

My PM ride was a full minute faster than my AM ride. I hope I don’t dislocate my shoulder patting myself on the back! :)

So that means you’re an “afternoon person”. I’m not a “morning person”, but I’ll spare your shoulder and pat you on the back after your PM ride. ;-)

dl4765, I was going to grab onto your shirt tail, but you flew past me so fast the wind blew off my glasses. I thought I had a fistful of shirt tail, until I heard barking and realized I had a big dog’s bandana. What a ride!

dl4765: I didn’t do 100 miles in a day, but when you join a challenge, it’ll take all the miles you’ve been recording since the beggining of the challenge, even though you weren’t part of the cahllenge at the time.

I guess they did it that way, so when joining a challenge that has already started, the miles you already did before joining, but after the challenge has started, count anyways.

So the 100 miles are actually miles logged in over 13 days. You can look into my profile, I bike almost everyday, usually from 10 to 60 miles depending on the time I have.

That said, the most I’ve done in a day is about 120 miles (that was a while ago though… but I have to get ready to those kind of distances since I’m currently training for an Ironman, where the bike leg is 112 miles)

IronDave, I wasn’t accusing you of anything. I was just amazed. Riding 20 miles in a day was making me walk funny, so I could only imagine what 100 (or 120 in your case) would do to me.

dl4765, I didn’t take it as an accusation. I joined the challenge late and I was surprised too I got so many miles at once.

After a while you get used to biking for some time. At first it does make you walk funny, you’re right.
The first time you do triathlons or you train for one, it is especially werid to start your run leg juste after the bike. I’ve never done the full 112 miles and ran after that, the most I did is 40 miles before runnning. I can tell you; you do feel your legs when you start your run…

I Biked 100 Miles! I Lost 5 Lbs!

I did a 20K Duathalon today (my first! placed third in the “team” category: yeah for me!), but I’ll probably just start from scratch/point zero - in hopes that it might keep me more motivated to press onward and forward!

I’d be interested in what motivates you Ironman types - the carrot or the stick? Regardless, more power to ya’!

@Dr Jon: I’m training for an Ironman, which defenitely will be the most distance I’ll do. I’m planning to do it next summer.
The most I’ve done so far is an Olympic Tri, even though I’ve done longer distances while training.

I have to say that I don’t exactly know what motivates me. Probably the challenge itsefl, as an Ironman is known as one of the most challenging thing to do. So I guess I want to be able to complete one so I know I can do it.

I always like to know that there is nothing I can’t achieve, so going for one thing known as one of the toughest thing to do is one way to do it.

To tell you the truth, I don’t know if I will be able to finish it. I probably wouldn’t be able to do it if I had to do it tomorrow, so I’m trying to train hard every day and have great confidence I’ll make it!

I Biked 100 Miles! I Lost 5 Lbs!

Appreciate the insight, IronDave! I understand that there are several Ironman competitions in addition to the Big Island event in Hawaii - where’s yours?

You touched on a topic that greatly interests me: “confidence.” Convincing your belief system that you earned the credibility and/or somehow “deserve” to participate in, finish, place, or even win anything is probably the focus of many inspirational books and testimonies! Look forward to reading yours!

Carrot, stick, journey, destination - all fascinating points of view to ponder! Again, more power to you!

@Dr Jon: I’m in France, so mine will be in Nice (French Riviera), though I’m close to Switzerland, so I could go to Zurich too (but it’s already sold out for next year).
Hawaii is open to qualified competitors only: you have to finish in the first spots in one or several of the other Ironmans to get qualified… so I’m not sure I will see Hawaii anytime soon (or at least not running among the Ironman participants).

I guess you’re right “confidence” is the main key here. You must be convinced that you can do it (Yes I can!), no matter how hard it is, if you know you can do it, it’s more likely that’ll you do it. When you start, thinking that you won’t be able to do it, chances are you won’t do it… (that applies to almost anything in life).

Instill that idea in a child and you’ve got something close to magic!!

I’m in Spain…maybe I’ll pop up and catch a glimpse of that inspired (and inspirational) event….

I was thinking about confidence, and I thought that even though confidence is essential to succeed, you still need to know and be aware that you can fail, and that you will probably fail some day.

I guess that’s what makes up your motivation (if you’re getting over confident that you’ll succeed, you’ll fight less) and that’s what draws the line between confidence and over confidence. Surely a thin line between the two, but I think that is one line you don’t want to cross.

Just did a few miles on a fixed/stationary recumbent bike - anyone object to my including this ride in my overall tally?

In fairness, I should note that the mileage did not transfer from my regular workout to the challenge, if relevant.

I Biked 100 Miles! The Inagural Gyminee Lands End to John O'Groats Bike Ride Champion!!!

Thanks IronDave! 100 miles isn’t a big deal for me… I’m usually a 10-12,000 mile per year rider. Hurt my knee nearly a year ago in Jan and hadn’t ridden much until the last few months. It’s only going to be about 5000 miles this year, but I took up water sports when I got hurt ;> Hoping to finish the other cycling challenges before spring/summer, as I will be on the river mostly. Safe riding!

I have a problem and need suggestions. I’m using a recumbent bike. I don’t know how to best describe the problem, but here goes.

My legs are uneven length. I get my left foot situated somewhat on the left pedal, but then my right foot isn’t set good. I start at the bottom, when my foot’s at the top I’m tip-toe, as it comes around my (right) foot slides and the pedal “rolls over” under my foot and I have to (best description I can think of) “hop” my foot back onto the pedal. I can’t get a nice smooth motion.

I’ve tried a few (silly) things, but no luck.
