Thanks for the invite GG, finally some sanity around the whole body-weight discussion. I was ready for someone to introduce advanced calculus to level the playing field based upon, height, body weight, BMI, age and phase of the moon. (smile)

I’ll try to keep up, but I’ve seen how hard-core the competitors are

I may not be able to actually start working out until November 5th (issues with the stupid people at the gym office, etc.), but I’ll use that as a personal challenge to play catch up once I can finally begin ;-) I’m sure GG is gonna give us all a run for our money!

can we still add body weight for exercises that use 100% of body weight. The only ones I can think of are dips and pull-ups. That should be easy to tally in, as its just your weight, no percentages.

Luckily not! Math was not my strong point in school. lol Hmm, that wouldn’t have helped me, I’m (according to the doc) “very small boned”. Where’s the chart for % of bone weight? Oh.. we don’t need it here. :-)

Have to confess though, I have one more %bw challenge to see to the end (which will end before this starts). Then NO MORE %bw challenges for me.

Well, rats! I was thinking it was Nov 1st.

Ah-hah! Until the gym status changes, just hug a 5 lb bag of sugar and do weighted crunches! Weighted crunches are legit! Hey, or hug a 25 lb bad of dog food! Ugh, that wouldn’t work for me, I’d be hollerin’ “Help!” lol

Nope, sorry.

Now, if when you do pull-ups you have weights strapped to you, or dangling from a belt etc., you can use that. Like if you strap on 10 lb ankle weights, one on each ankle, and you do pull-ups, you’re lifting a total of 20 lbs. with each rep.

Right guys?

You make the rules GG, since you created the challenge. No body weight means no body weight. I’ll still be doing push-ups and crunches (maybe I can find something heavy to hold while I do them), just not entering them in.

So if I do pull-ups on the assistance machine that takes 25lbs off my body weight do I have to count that as lifting -25lbs. per rep. I fear that could prove to be a strong disincentive.

or you could enter them in as 0 weight, that way you can still keep track of reps

Yeah, I could just enter them in as 0 lbs weight I guess :-P

The same goes for your pullups. You wouldn’t count -25 lbs because that would be detrimental. Just enter your pullups as 0 weight if you still do them.

So if I do pull-ups on the assistance machine

I don’t know anything about an assistance machine .

fattysmo, it sounds like you know about that machine, I think your post answered that? Like I said, I’ve never heard of an assistance machine. I’m use to the “old days” when there was just a horizontal bar above your head to do pull-ups on. :-)

I Lost 5 Lbs!

GG, an assisted pull-up machine has the bars at the top of the machine, and then a little step for you to stand on. You set the weight, and it effectively counterbalances the step with that amount of weight, removing it from your body weight.

I have been doing chin-ups with -52 pounds, so that means I’m lifting about 70 pounds instead of my total body weight of 120.

The machine is actually really great, because it helps you keep good form and do the exercise in the early stages, when you can’t do just one pull-up or chin-up.

GG, if we are only counting plates, bars, barbells, and 0 lbs for assisted machines and letting Gyminee do the calculations for all other “non-weighted” activity that is great, if we are going to reintroduce body weight I’ll bow out.

Forgive me for the bluntness, but a 200 lb person competing against a 110 lb person by counting the lift of their personal weight in stair-climbing, lunges, dips or other such activities is hardly a fair competition. The physical dynamics are already stacked against the lighter individual with weighted activities. This is pretty much why I have pulled out of all of the lifting challenges. They don’t bloody count the weight of the lifter in power lifting.

I had no idea what that assisted machine was, but after reading lizanneh’s description, if a person uses that machine, the weight recorded for pull-ups on it would be 0 lbs.

Exactly. On the other %bw challenge I had to sometimes workout for 3 hours just to get enough reps to try to keep up (I weigh 108 lbs).

So it’s clear, when I do weighted sit-ups, I cross my arms over my chest, hold against me 5 lbs weights. So I lift 5 lbs with each rep.

No body weight is to be counted.

To be honest the challenges are just a bit of fun to give an extra incentive. I just hope that by having females coming top like GG did in the last challenge, and so far I’m coming first in one of the others, that it will show other women that lifting weights can be fun and that we can be fierce competition. I don’t consider myself to be lifting ‘girl’ weights – My lat pulldowns are on par with most guys and I’m pressing over 220 pounds on the leg press.

Oh and GG I also know what a dip assist machine is as I nearly broke one last week, and my jaw with it…!

Stick to your guns GG! This is a no body-weight challenge, so there’s no sense for all the fuss. No body weight means no body weight. If you don’t like it, there are plenty of weight lifting challenges that include body weight exercises out there.

I’m not trying to sound ornery, but the person creating the challenge sets the rules for the challenge. Exercises like pull-ups, push-ups, body squats, crunches, etc. that involve body weight with no additional weight (or in the case of the assistance machine, weight assistance) count as zero pounds or kilograms toward the challenge total. If you insist on including these types of exercises in your workout routine, please either do not participate in this challenge or instead enter the number of reps only when you record them.

It’s really that simple :-P

To be honest the challenges are just a bit of fun to give an extra incentive.

That’s right. And knowing this group (and others that may join in), we’ll make sure it’s fun. ;-)

I just hope that by having females coming top like GG did in the last challenge, and so far I’m coming first in one of the others, that it will show other women that lifting weights can be fun and that we can be fierce competition.

I’ve been watching you on that challenge, you’re doing great! Hopefully more ladies will join us and see how much fun it is, and that we (male and female) may be competitors, but we all motivate each other anyway.

With weight lifting the traditional way, I may fall to the bottom of the Leader Board and stay there. lol But that’s okay, this challenge will truly be a challenge for us.

I don’t consider myself to be lifting ‘girl’ weights –

I’m afraid I’m “pre-girl weights”. lol Mainly for upper body. Lousy joints decide what I lift. Grrr!! How do I fasten training wheels onto “pre-girl weights”?? heh heh

And pharangese stay away from those dip assist machines! Sounds like a rotten critter!
