iPhone Users - What iPhone feature is missing?

If you could have any iPhone feature on Gyminee, what would it be?

“Did Something Extra?” and “I Didn’t do This Exercise” in iPhone interface

(Cross-posted from Forums/Feature Requests)

When submitting progress on a workout in the standard web interface,
there’s a section at the bottom to add cardio or strength exercises
that aren’t part of your baseline workout. This is great for when you
try out a new exercise or when you’re feeling energetic and jump on the
treadmill for some unscheduled cardio.

Is there any way you
can include this functionality in the iPhone interface on the “Submit
Progress for All Exercises” page? As it stands right now, I’ve got to
open a new browser window on the iPhone and navigate to the standard
interface “Submit Progress for All” page in order to get the “Did
Something Extra?” box at the bottom of the page. (This inevitably
causes me to submit my entire workout twice, which is a big pain to
correct…)

It would also be great to have the “I Didn’t do This Exercise” option show up in the iPhone interface.

Thanks,
Dave

Usability - easier targets

You do a really good job dividing up the screen into easily viewable targets with those handy horizontal lines.

However, all of your links are on the text of the headline, instead of encompassing the entire bounded region -for instance, it would be much easier if I could tap anywhere in the region of my "Legs" workout to activate it, instead of having to hit the much smaller target of the text "Legs."

Same goes of course for any section like that, not just the workouts section, but especially on the workouts and exercises pages since most people are probably a bit more shaky than usual when using those!

Exercise Progress

I've noticed that when you select and exercise from the library from the iPhone interface, it does not show the previous days the exercise was done.

In the workout menu, you can see the exercise information, but only for that workout. It'd be awesome to see all days performed for that exercise from any menu.

iPhone Enhancements

Hey there! A couple things (some of which have been mentioned) that I think would help the iPhone app out immensely.

1) Native App (of course, but that will be ALOT of work).

2) iPhones should be automatically re-directed to the iPhone interface... I used the site for nearly a week before I realized that there was a separate interface.

3) On the Workouts tab, instead of just listing a workout as "One of your personal workouts" or somesuch, it should really tell you the last time you did that workout, so it's a bit easier to tell what's next. At 6AM, I can't remember what I did yesterday. :)

4) lbs/kg mi/km... let it be set in preferences, and don't worry about it in the workout entry.

All in all, though, this is fantastic, guys! Keep up the good work.
Rep timer / counter

One thing I would really love to have is a rep counter and timer.

EG Doing press ups I like to try and go down for 2 secs and up for 2 secs. Giving me a 4 sec rep. You'd need to add in some time at the beginning to get into position. So you'd need a set of variables changed by the user but set fo each excersize.

Prep Time: X sec

Rep Time: X sec

Number of reps to do: X

Then just having a button next to Submit button in the Workout screen would allow me to put my iphone in a good location, press the button and have it guide me on my set.

This would truely intergrate the iphone into my workout

I would like to be able to view the full nutritional stats for other days besides the current day. When you click on the calendar to past dates it only provides you with calories, total fat, carbs, and protien for the past day and the current 'Today's Nutritional Stats" remain posted despite the fact you're viewing a past date. It does not allow you to view the full breakdown with the fiber, sodium, cholesterol, and potassium stats for the days other than the current day.

SDK

I'll add to everyone else in saying that this is turning into a great webapp for the iPhone and really making it invaulable to my workout routine.

As for ideas to add to it, I am just getting into Gyminee so I don't have any based of my experience quite yet, but here is something you guys might find relevent. Apple recently posted some patents for what looks to be an overhaul of the iPod Nike+ system but for the iPhone. In the article, the author goes over the patents, but also talks about all of the possibilities that this system could offer, and would make a great read for both users and developers of Gyminee alike.

That being said, many of the complaints in this thread deal with the slowness of EDGE, which is very valid. This is one reason that I would say that the biggest improvement Gyminee could make is moving the iPhone version from a WebApp and use the now released SDK for the iPhone to create a native app version of gyminee. One of the bigger benifits would be the user interface would all be stored locally on ones iPhone as an app. This would mean that Gyminee would only have to use EDGE or wifi to grab user data (which is just basic text, and very small), rather then also loading UI images, exercise images, exercise movies, etc. This would GREATLY reduce the depenence on EDGE or wifi, making any data grabbing over the network a much quicker ordeal. Plus, it would allow you to develope a much better UI that would have a bit more screen real estate, and more importantly, be much better organized due to layers and the whole Core Animation, as well as being MUCH more responsive then a website.

Not only that, but you would have access to the media library, so you could even add support for playing music right from within the app, maybe adding some music control like what Nike+ does.

It would really just amount to a much more usable format, and really make Gyminee shine as a killer app on the iPhone. As much as I love the webapp version, webapps just aren't as slick or useable as a native app.

Any thoughts regarding this?

What abour getting rid of the lbs / kg selection and making the icons a little larger for the reps & weights. Because as your shaking after a good pump it takes 3 times as long mashing the wrong numbers.

A member really wouldnt go back and forth to lbs and kg during a work out. That should be ina preferences I would think?

Supplement Diary?

I was thinking that it might be nice to have a supplement diary in-line with the food diary. Since I try and take supplements like arginine, creatine, etc throughout the day, it's sometimes hard to remember if I've taken them.
Easier Diet Tracking

Similar to the standard version of the site, I think the iPhone interface should have a (+) button next to food items when you search. This would only take up a few more pixels and save on tons of load times.

For instance, say I ate a Wendy's grilled chicken sandwich and a small fry. I'd have to search for the chicken sandwich, view the details of it, click the (+), then go back, search for the fries, view the details, click the (+). Alternatively, if the (+)s were next to the search results, I could have skipped 2 page-loads, thus making logging my food quicker.

Snap a picture of that quirky workout machine that Gyminee doesn't have a record of. Submit it to Amazon Mechanical Turk for identification and have it added to Gyminee's library of machines.

2) RFID reader built into iPhone. All workout machines RFID tagged.

As soon as I got near a machine my iPhone would register proximity and duration of proximity. Later I could see the list of machines I was near and enter in the weight, reps etc.

I've noted a bug where when you attempt to type in how many minutes your run was like say 10:20 (10 minutes 20 seconds), Gyminee completely rejects it and you end up with a blank "time" field when you attempt to submit the report. Only was I can think of to rectify this from my end is to put in something like 10.25 for 10 minutes, 15 seconds or 10.75 for 10 minutes, 45 seconds. Unfortunently, doing it this way is difficult because of the math you'll have to do for seconds that are not 15, 30, or 45. I hope you guys find a way to make the report accept a colon. Thanks.

My Wishes for The Next Update

I've been waiting for a tool this easy to use on a mobile device for years. Without writing a treatise here are my two main pain points with the web app:

Slow. I know it's not your fault, but my hope is that with the SDK being released next week that we will see speed improvements.

No History. It would be great to see the most recent values for values.

Difficult Input. How about +/- instead of having to type the value?

also sometimes i like to switch up exercises within my workout. being able to find the workout in the library is nice to see how to do it, but it would be even nicer to be able to click "do this exercise now" or something like that and then that exercise is added as part of your current workout and you can input your sets.

What good is having the library of exercises available if it's not possible to record actually doing an exercise? I work out, go through several screens to track down the exercise I've just done and...find a description of what swimming is?

Please add a "record this exercise" button to each exercise in the library. And add a calories-burned-per-minute aspect to each one, so all users will have to do is record which exercise they've done and for and how long. And once they're add-able from the iPhone, please don't require that each new exercise be put into an existing workout.

Oh, and make the library searchable rather than making users hunt through multiple screens.

Because I care about this thing...

Notes and Preloading

I switchd to Gyminee and the iPhone from MySportTraining on my Treo. Three substantial differences that I have notices

Notes field: I use to write notes. Something like "be careful of your shoulder" or "time to go up." It helped me understand how to think about the numbers.

On the heels of notes, I used to be able to click a button that would show me the weight I had lifted over the last month or so on the current exercise. That was helpful to quickly tell if I had plateaued, etc.

EDGE is slow. Living in the city, my gym is underground. I get EGDE, but it is slow, and I am wondering if preloading of exercises would be possible - something akin to Gmail's new iPhone interface.

All in all the software is great - thanks!

Gyminee team, thanks so much for creating such an awesome fitness tool, it is much appreciated, and your enthusiasm for improvement is noted. Any chance that a field for notes for each exercise could be added to the iphone site to allow for the recording of supersets, drop sets, needed a spot, etc. How about a feature that would allow a new exercise to be added/substituted to a workout via the iphone site, possibly an add exercise button once in the workout exercises list? Thanks again for the great product. I've got my whole family using it!

Hey guys,

I just wanted to mention that we've been working on a round of iPhone updates that address many of your suggestions (a few should be available right now and have been discussed on the blog).

On top of what is mentioned in the blog, within the next week the iPhone will support submitting progress for an entire workout on one page, and some other small enhancements.

Also -

You should have the lbs/kg selection be based on your profile instead of being able to select it each time, and doing it that way would give you more screen space for the reps and lbs area. Plus when your shaking after doing some intense sets you wont hit it by accident. ;)

Easy input

I second jrtoys' request: It'd be really nice if one could load one big form for a workout, allowing to submit progress reports for all exercises therein. Then one could load this form at the beginning of training, input data on the go, and submit it all at the end of the workout. This would be especially helpful if one only has EDGE at the gym ...

@2_6: You can't do too much progress viewing on the iPhone as of yet. I am not sure what you mean by printing (especially in this group).

@imraps: I like your suggestion of adding something more useful instead of "You have not done this today". We will look into that for sure. Also, the design is meant to best support doing one workout at a time. A workout typically consists of several execises. After you perform an exercise, it jumps back to the workout screen so you can pick the next exercise. We do this because we don't really know what exercise you will perform next.

When ATT's network isn't so fast.

Another point of frustration for me with this web site on the iphone stems when submitting workout statistics.

Once the individual workout information is entered, the display returns to the "workouts" sheet or tab.

However, to enter data for the next workout, you need again to click on the specified work out and wait for the ATT network to respond.

Could there be a shortcut where after submitting a given workout information, the website immediate jumps to the next workout in the workouts tab?

Again, this is not a problem when ATT's network is behaving normally, but that cannot be guaranteed.

I think this suggestion will at least reduce the wait and frustration in entering workout data in these circumstances.

I'd like to know if others have problems like these.

A simple description of the workouts

It would be VERY useful if on the iphone display for workouts, the statistics of last workouts were displayed.

Having to click every workout link to get the repetitions and weight information before the exercise takes time and it's frustrating, specially when ATT's network is not responding well.

I realize that iphone real estate is precious, but I feel this information is more valuable then the current message "You have not done this today".

Maybe you can use an Icon or an empty circle mark to indicate the the workout hasn't been done, and reuse the remaining real estate to display the statistics.

Does anyone else agree?

iPhone redirection

I'm not a full-time fan of auto redirection - while I understand the purpose (and the debates, I purist from the days of ye' ol' <a href="http://bradyjfrey.com" title="">webstandards</a>), if the system does change please allow a link to jump out (gmail has this function). I dig my iphone for the full featured browser, let the watered-down version stay for those who want it, but not force fed.

Skimming through the reads, when I did use the iphone target version, I would have loved to add my own workouts and adjust the current ones. A little advanced, but you should be able to kill out the flash videos via CSS and leave me the functionality.

If I didn't say it yet, thanks for the beautiful app - I showed it off to the managers at the corporate Club One office in San Francisco as I spent a long day demoing your competition, but this one hit the mark (and Club One's in house attempt is a sad comparison).
http://trac.webkit.org/projects/webkit/wiki/DetectingWebKit

Specifically, they are detecting the it is a mobile webkit browser by looking for Mozilla/5.0

This is a useful distinction so the detection can work with other mobile versions of their browsers.

I like the experience o the amazon.com iphone interface. It does autodetect and send me to the iphone version. and also includes a link I can select to send me back to the main interface. It also remembers the preference.

Exercise Progress Fields

A very slight enhancement that would make a big difference: Increase the size of the input fields for reps and weight in the iphone interface ... the current ones are sometimes hard to activate.

Also, it would be nice if the cursor would be automatically put at the END of any input field in the iphone interface. This should be possible with a javascript-oneliner and it would help immensely, as it is really a pain to move the cursor to the end if it happens to be in the beginning of a very short input field (like sets and weight fields).

Re: Re: Redirection

@aktif8: Because having domain.com/iphone or iphone.domain.com is, quite honestly, the lazy way of doing it. The site should detect the browser and deliver the correct site. The other day I somehow browsed off /iphone and was delivered a "regular" Gyminee page -- it wasn't pretty.

Another idea -- has anyone else found it difficult to fill out cardio workout forms at the end of your workout? The cardio equipment I use goes through the numbers so quickly, and then shuts off... I have to scramble to get the form filled out. I'm not sure what the solution for that is -- perhaps a text area for quickly entering notes that I can use to fill out the form after I have all the information? Not sure... Maybe I just need to get used to it.

add exercise from library

I agree with the above that if you can do the exercise from the library you should also be able to record it

iPhone Calendar Feature

iPhone needs access to the calendar. It would be nice to open workouts and to be redirected directly to the current day in the calendar. That way you can see the scheduled workouts for that day, and do not need to remember which one you are supposed to do.

This is a feature I am missing.

A few things

I'd love it if Workouts could be grouped (both on iPhone and on the normal web site). I cycle through several workout programs and the list gets a little too long for my taste - I'd rather click into the workout and see the individual programs listed.

Food: I'd like it to have "My Recipes", and a way to star/unstar and to add a food without having to load the foods information. I like the way the normal website works. The iphone interface requires too much load time.

BodyTracker - good.

Buddies - Ok, but kind of not a big deal. I'd probably rather have a group tab (with the ability to read topics/comments).

Library - nice, but unless you can record a single exercise I don't really see the rational. I understand it'd be nice to learn how to do an exercise, but if you can't record it, then why? I think it'd be nice if you could could record a single exercise (instead of only being able to record a whole workout program).
