iPhone Users - So who plans on dropping the money for a new 3G iPhone?

Not I. If you do the math, you're paying more over 24 months for the 2nd gen iPhone than for the 1st gen iPhone. And I live in an area without 3G, so I'd be paying extra for no other reason then GPS (which is nice, but I don't need) and a sexy black back (I've always wanted my iPhone to be all black). So yea, I'm keeping my 16gb 1st gen iPhone....Not upgrading. How about you guys?

Already Have

I waited because I did not want the Edge network. I'm glad I waited because the apps are going to make the phone the first true computer in your pocket. And yes I waited 5 hours to get one. Towards my defense my existing phone was broken.

Gonna wait

I'm gonna wait - I don't have AT&T and I hear that there are some security issues with it currently (http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and-Wireless/Apples-iPhone-Configuration-Utility-Disappoints/).

I don't really need the AppStore because I use AppInstaller and Cydia which do the same thing.

I will get it eventually but for the time being I am content with my 1st Gen iPhone. :)

I'm in Canada and I took advantage of Rogers/Fido attempting to save face with reduced data plans.

My package is $30/per month for 6GB of data + my existing voice plan.

I sold my 1st Gen for $375 and bought the 3G iPhone on launch day. Other than the shorter battery life, I think it's a great upgrade. How did I live without the AppStore before???

I could not resist. I think my current iPhone is awesome, but it is only a 4 gig. Had to have 16 gig. Got one in white and a black one for the wife.

It does. You'll be pleasantly surprised, trust me on this. I don't even know how Windows using iPhone people do it. I mean, it can't be as flawless as this.....

But yo, if I were you, I'd start copying all the contacts from your old phone into 'Address Book' and any upcoming appointments into 'Calendar'. That way, once you get your phone, you can just sync with iTunes and have everyting, *pop*, appear on your iPhone. And if you don't have your internet bookmarks saved in Safari or Firefox, you might wanna do that to if you want those to transfer seamlessly.

I was going to get the new iPhone. I mean $200 for 3G and GPS...worth it right? Well then ATT announced there new pricing and it's redicuals. After 2 years of the new prices the phone change would end up costing over $600. Not worth it!

I always have to have the latest tech. I'm bad that way.

I am disappointed about some things about it though. I wish it had cut and past, stereo bluetooth, and tasks. Other complaints about AT&T... if they are going to raise the data price to match other PDA price then the iPhone should be a full PDA and have all the features other PDAs have like cut and paste (and many other features)! Also I am so angry that they removed SMS from the package.

If I didn't have an iPhone already I would for sure. But since I already have one, I see no use in upgrading. In 1 year Apple will do the same to us again and release a next gen phone. EDGE is due for its upgrade soon anyhow. I also only really use it for mail and maps which is more than enough with EDGE. $10 more for GPS and 3G, no thanks.

in regards to a couple remarks made above.

safari crashing, and copy/paste not existing and anything else that is SW related isn't something that would be exclusive to the 3g phone.

the new phone will be running on firmware 2.0. so will the gen1 iphone once they release it (july 11?).

point is, don't buy the new phone just because you think there will be improvements in safari - the phones will both be operating on teh same software!
upgrades are often being made to teh SW - remember we started at 1.02 I believe and currently we are at 1.14 and soon to be at 2.0

sit tight and eventually they will incorporate all the features we want.

It is faster and 3G coverage is pretty good around Chicago according to the ATT coverage map. I just got my iPhone a couple months ago when ATT was having it's refurb sale and got the 8 gig. I would like to upgrade to a 16 gig, or wish they had announced a 32 gig model. I'll have to wait it out just a little bit though, I remember the disaster from first wave products from apple when I got my iPod Touch as well as the rumors that first batches of iPhones had bad audio. Better to wait for 2nd or 3rd production runs.

probably not.....

After reading thru the blog, I've decided against it. It's more money a month and the only real improvement is quicker download and gps!! I spend my entire day in hotzones for work and at home and the city I live in is setting up city-wide wifi. I thought for sure with this phone that they'd fix the copy and paste functions and allow you to view pictures on the phone (i also hate having to log on to the website to view MMS messages, even if it is a dead technology). I can't forward my text messages to others either, but I love that the msgs are organized by sender in conversations.

Prior to my iphone, i had a european 3g telephone that isn't widely seen in the US. It also allowed me to send contacts as text messages and it had a few other things that the mac people should take note of. A flash on the camera would be HUGE as well as short-clip video recording, copy and paste functions and it could also swap info via blue tooth and it had a camera in the front for visual chatting with other 3G phones, although that wasn't available in the USA either. I lost it in March however, and after kicking myself I got the iphone. I love my iphone, but this 3G model still leaves much room for improvement. So I'm sticking to my 1st generation in the hopes that in a year or two they seriously up the ante to something seriously and thoroughly thought out.

Yea mdefurio, it sounds like, for this generation, they are really trying to clamp down on those trying to unlock the iPhone and use it on another network so much so that they are making you sign the contract and activate it in store.

I'll admit though, I was anticipating this phone so much that I sold my first gen iPhone on eBay for more cash than I had hoped 2 days before the 3G announcement. I swear to God: those two days without my iPhone and using my old shitty LG phone made me realize just how much I can't live without this phone anymore. I just hated using the other phone. Wanted my iPhone back so bad. Once they announced the 3G iPhone, I was like "f*ck you" as I'm not extending my contract another 2 years and its pointless since there is no 3G in Lansing, MI. Drove to an AT&T store out in Brighton, MI and bought myself a 16gb iPhone that day...lol

AT&T knows they have people by the balls. Seriously. Release a phone like the iPhone and then keep it exclusive to themselves and they know that once you use it, you're not going back to anything else. I really can't see myself using any other phone in the future except for newer iterations of the iPhone and if I have to sign a new two year contract each time my old one is over, so be it. Fuc*ing AT&T though....

I Want Mine Now

I'll be in line Friday afternoon probably. I'm going to give my current iPhone to my wife and get the new one right away. She has a Treo on Sprint, which is terrible here in LA. And I use my iPhone for email and web constantly (for work and play) so I am dying to upgrade to the 3G network.

they didn't do enough hardware updates for me to update. true, 3g and gps are nice, but i think i'll wait for the next installment of the iphone to come out before i jump on it. with the $10 increase per month in the at&t service plan, it's really not that much cheaper in the long run. i'll probably wait till they at least upgrade the memory.

YES.

edge sucks. i would pay the 299 just to have 3g. the regular iphone is old news, its time for an upgrade.

im just kinda let down i thought they would of switched it up a little more and added more things. MMS is a dead end technology I accept there decision not to incorporate that, but i do hope they make it easy to view those messages... I HATE HAVING TO GO TO THAT SITE TO LOOK AT A PIC SOMEONE SENT ME....

also still no copy and paste... video recording... voice commands and no other bluetooth connectivity besides their fucking ear piece.. there is a lot more you can do with bluetooth besides an ear roach.

but regardless im still gonna go get one, im glad they knocked the price and made it available in white.

Probably Not...

I probably won't. I have an 8GB and would love to go to a 16GB 3G, but it looks like you only get it for $299 if you sign a new contract with AT&T and since I only got my iPhone around Christmastime, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be eligable. True GPS and faster connection are tempting, but not tempting enough to make me want to spend my money yet. If there was a camera lens in the front to allow for video chat, or if there was a 32GB version, or if there was a significantly improved camera, or if they enabled stereo bluetooth in a new version only... then I'd probably upgrade.

Trade-in?

I would only upgrade if I could trade-in my 1st gen. IPhone toward a 2nd gen. IPhone. The software package will be the same for both 1st & 2nd gen. Iphones. It would be nice to have the speed.

sounds like you are forced to use at&t - contract and activation on the spot. if i can't unlock it and use it on tmobile (like my current iphone) i am definitely going to pass.
