recovering from injury

My doctor has released me to begin running. I walked for two weeks. He suggests quarter miles to start running until I get up to 3 miles in 6 weeks. How many should I do the first time out? Any suggestions?

Cramps

I've been getting back into running after a long break. Recently every time I go for a run, I get cramps in my lower abdomen. I usually have to stop, walk a while, breathe slowly, and then it goes away, but does anyone know how to prevent them from happening in the first place?

Brand new to running

Hi everyone! I am brand new to running. I'm brand new to the gyminee group. I'm taking an online digital media course to learn more about technology and the instructor mentioned this website. I know this is a bit ambitious but I think that running is such an amazing sport and I think that there is such a positive vibe from runners. I want to learn how to run (I run flat footed.) and I want to train for the NYC marathon. I'm a little overweight (need to lose about 30 lbs. What are some suggestions that you have? How do I train? How do I get started? Has anyone ever run a marathon? Please, write back when you can.
