Life happens

For the last three weeks I have struggled to get in work outs. So much so that not getting a workout in has become as depressing as getting on the scale. I suppose that this is even progress... wanting to work out so much that failing to do so is frustrating. In July just having the motivation was a goal, guess I am over that. The next few weeks should present opportunities, and with the season change and lack of light, my bike work out in the morning will be replaced with an hour swim. Perhaps I'll start getting in a 30 minute ride at lunch if weather permits. If I get the swim in the morning that will leave the evenings for resistance training.

Thanks for the invite

Congrats on the success of all your hard work this summer, and on doubling us all up on the swim challenge. How did you become such a good swimmer? I poop out not much further after 1 km, but I'm hoping to improve so I can do some longer triathlons next year. We'll see ...

Back on track

It would appear that I am back on track, the blip up I did not track is gone and I am down 1.6 lbs from my lowest-to-date weight. Motivation is coming back, and I no longer feel like I am just hanging on to the gains I have made.

Personal Best

Longest continuous swim yet. Despite being out of the pool for nearly three weeks, and being sick most of last week, the hour long swim felt surprisingly good. Calves and feet started to cramp last ten minutes, but felt really good to cover 3.5 kilometers in a single outing.

After a week, I finally got back out on the bike. The 15 mile ride was much easier than I thought, although the heart rate was much higher that it was a week ago. I should be able to get a ride in consistently again.

Other than Monday the week has been a loss to serious exercise. My last hope are early mornings on Saturday and Sunday, I hope to get into the gym, even if it is for 30 minute swims.

Mr StevenG, my nemesis in the swimming challage, thanks for the invite. I doubt I'll catch you but will most definitely try. My shoulder feels good now, so I'll be swimming today. So, far I only do 500m. I might need to up that to be a contender in the challenge! Happy Workouts to you! Jocie D

Opps...

My brain is drying up. I meant the swimming challenge is looking better. More people and they are putting in laps too. Don't worry I am still the closest to you (pretty far off) and I will be going on vacation for 1 week. So I don't think I will be much of a threat unless I can knock it out before I go. But two weeks isn't enough time for me. Don't kill yourself at work. Try relaxing at your desk if anything.... it will relent and you can get back into your routine.

Yes, I'm back!

Having trouble getting back into it at the min, still got a lot of work on, but I can see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. Just got to sort membership out and then I'm ready to swim. if only everyone would just wait a week or two for me to catch up. I cannot belive I've fell 300 miles behind on my own bike challenge, I had high hopes for that. nevermind I will still try to catch up got a big riding weekend planned next month. Hows thing with yourself? you seem to be doing extramly well with keeping this updated.

Farewell Old Friends

This morning I had to review the closet, certain clothes just look terrible on me. Any trousers bigger than a 42 fall off my hips and butt and have been placed in the Goodwill heap. All of my 42s now fit either comfortably loose or creep down my hips and butt if not cinched tight with a belt. I am realistically looking at discarding the 42's from the closet by Sept 20. Many of these have been with me as I yo-yoed in the past. My "fat suit" had to be tailored last week and the pants taken in about 3.5 inches. The tailor warned that there is going to be little he can do with the slacks and the jacket from this point on. It is with a great deal of happiness that I see each of these progressively smaller waist pants head towards a charity drive. Each of which I had told myself, "this is temporary, this is the last time I buy a larger size." Now after 4 years of this mantra I have done something about it, and I have rediscovered how much I enjoy fitness. I have crossed the six week mark and the eight week mark and I believe I can say with confidence many of the things I have been working on are now habits I will continue to build on.

Workout & Computer

Hi Steven, I didn't get my computer fixed, exactly, it's just "behaving". <g> I ordered a new one, should be here next week, I think. It took me 4 or 5 days, all day, trying to build and order it! My computer kept locking up so I had to shut it off and start over! Grrr! Only my left hand and wrist is sore today. Dawned on me why. Yesterday I did leg extensions. Ya' know how you put your knees over the padded roller, then your feet/ankles under the lower roller? Well, my knees won't bend enough, so after putting my knees over the roller, I have to grab the verticle bar (that has the leg curl roller at the end) and lift it, put my feet under the lower roller, then lower it down onto my feet/ankles. After doing that 49 times (sets), that's why my hands and wrists (mostly left) hurt today! Great, and today's an "arm day"! lol

New Program

You're right, I make sure my clients stick to a routine for at the most 2 months and then change it around. Variety is the key to keep the body guessing and seeing the development. Unfortunately I don't know anyone elses programs but I could recommend that you do my other full body training program for beginners. I have also done a max muscle gain program, which may sound a little extreme it is a very good all round program and teaches you to split your body parts up into different routines. I hope this helps and keep up the good work. Please feel free to visit my blog for more hints and tips http://www.beebleblog.com All the best Hugo

Full Body Program B question

Hey Steven, I know you left the question about how many calories this program uses up over a month ago. Unfortunately I don't get alerted when a message arrives. As you said yourself there are just too many variables to work out the exact or even rough caloric usage of this workout. Of course there are others that would disagree, but the usage is all down to how hard you push yourself and your own body build. As I am sure you are aware you can make this workout as easy or as hard as you like. Just make sure you are pushing yourself and keeping good technique and you will see the results. Hugo

Useful goal setting tool

Useful calculator for determining the number of days between dates http://www.timeanddate.com/date/duration.html As of today my goal date is 201 days away. Using a BMR calculator, my estimated BMR is not 2006 but 2145 and adjusted for a lightly active lifestyle it is 2934 (3308 for moderate). If I hold my caloric intake at 2000, I should reach my goal in 187 days. I should anticipate loosing 1 lb every four days. Helpful info now when I feel like I am not making progress.

Ha. I work with many chinese and vietnamese folks and practically everyday we eat in Little Saigon. The pho here normally has these thinly slices of rare beef, which cooks in the soup. Problem: how accurate the the nutrition stats are. Problem: when I eat Dim sum - that's hard to track too ;)

After breaking spokes nearly every time I went out during the last two weeks, and then having the wheels in for repair two to three days at a time, I bit the bullet and replaced the wheel set. Much more than I wanted to spend at this time, but I thought in the long run it would be less costly than continuously risking the formation a new healthier lifestyle. Anxious to get try out the new wheels on the old frame and see if it makes a real difference in effort, speed and the desire to add more miles to my usual circuit.

Cycling & Swimming

The kind of cycling challenge I need is like we're promoting on the forum. Just to push me to make it to the "finish line". The joints are the same as usual, except my worse knee (left) became even worse when I got too carried away with the Weight Lifting Challenge. I guess it was a good thing my computer went goofy for a week, I may have destroyed that knee beyond use if I kept on at the rate I was working out. I've pretty much cut back to near no weight lifting, hoping my knee will recuperate a little. I tried to replace it with cycling (which seems to help my ankles, knees and hip joints), but, I agree, the 180 is pretty much pointless. Swim? Me? Can I wear a pedometer and doggy paddle in the bathtub? (heh heh) I wouldn't be much of a challenger...I can't swim. Never doggy paddled either. And I have aquaphobia (too many times kids threw me (when a little girl) into pools, knowing I couldn't swim. They thought if was funny. Also, one too many times swim instructors not believing an older (young) girl didn't know how to swim (even though in the beginner class), trying to force me to "just swim to the other side!". Sure. Yep. Chatty Kathy post, sorry. :-)

Bike back in commission

Lost two more spokes in the rear wheel last week so it was in the shop for three days. This brought me to the weekend where the wife and kids rightfully took precedent over the workout. But good food choices seemed to work for me as this morning I was still down a bit. The ride this morning was challenging but it is clear I have developed some stamina and resilience.

Good work man

Never heard about the 6 weeks thing. I'm not sure it applies to me... my biggest problem has always been not really having any routine. It's a constant struggle for me to not eat what I feel like eating. I mean, it is and it isn't. On one side, when I'm doing well, the idea of eating half a pizza isn't tempting at all. However, if I'm doing really well, I contemplate it because I get into the "no big deal" mindset. If I don't do well, I get into the "no point in not eating it" mindset. haha. So I have to work hard to keep into the goal-oriented mindset.

Furhter evidence the efforts are paying off

Had to recheck the scale three times today, said I dropped 2.5 lbs since yesterday. Pulled the battery and put it back in; the scale still showed a weight loss, but not as exciting. Nevertheless, I seem to be pushing through the plateau. Got into the gym in last night for a full resistance workout, but all lanes in the pool were occupied with people. Put in a longer ride this morning, and it felt good. Will try to make the 13 mile loop my standard ride from here on out. My cadence is climbing back up, averaging closer to 72 instead of 65. I am now working on getting up on the pedals for longer sections of the hill climbs; this brings my heart rate way up, but not dangerously so.

Created 3 months ago by StevenG

StevenG

Dare I say the plateau is fracturing?

Despite no significant exercise Sunday and Monday, it appears the long progress is about to reappear. To be fair, I have been fighting bad scale readings from the travels, and have exceeded what I thought I had reached during the trip. I am hopeful that I'll finally see a pound or two come off this week. Got out on the bike this morning and will get to the gym tonight.

A really cool Bike trail website

Hey Steve, I noticed you on one of the Challenges, came to your site to see how you were losing weight and discovered you like to bike. Have you checked out http://www.bikely.com ? I'm a mountain biker myself, and by using it I've discovered a great almost-100% rural 20km bike loop just west of Boston. It was a *great* motivator for me since now I found an activity that makes me work out for over 2 hours uninterrupted. Check it out, you might find a great path for your road biking needs. I noticed you maxed out around 76 minutes... I'm sure you could use Bikely to find a great road path that can get you closer to 2 hours or so. That's when you burn big time calories. Good luck!

Frustrating

No movement on the scale, I know I was a bit spotty last week, but I thought working hard these last three days would get the scale moving. People are commenting I look better, but I just do not feel it yet. Off to get that morning ride in. I don't dare slack up or I'll reverse course. Need to keep this up for four more weeks to be sure it is a habit and not a brief goal.

An unbroken string of nine days in my workout and this should continue until Sunday when travel will make it very difficult to get into the gym or get on a bike. Now working on cadence

I added an inexpensive bike computer that measures cadence as well. It appears I should be targeting a cadence of 90-110 in order to avoid injury and increase endurance. Working on maintaining a cadence today made for a completely different riding experience, my average cadence was closer to 75. My ride has a fair amount of uphill riding so getting to an average of 90 is going to take a week or two. New route today which required that I get off and walk up hill for about three minutes.
