Veganism

I went vegetarian [not vegan, I still ate eggs and cheese... the decadence!] and felt great too! I was inspired by a book I read, SKINNY BITCH, funny and every informative! Though a bit too extreme for my taste. My vegetarian stint lasted about two weeks and then little by little I gave into my selfish eating habits again. Soy milk rocks... enough said! Although I do intend to raise my children vegetarian in the future when I have more moolah and time. I'm glad it's working for you!!

Exercise

I've been eating all vegan for 3 or 4 days now and I have SO MUCH energy. It's weird. I write down what I eat to make sure I'm getting enough protein and raw vegetables. And I started exercising more seriously -- I'm doing my workout DVDs while the baby naps. I can't believe how GOOD I feel. It's surreal. Endorphins, or something. Whatever, it's working.

Vegan-ish

SO I've been giving a lot of thought to the annual heart trouble I've been having, and the family history of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. I am going to try eating vegan for 2 weeks to see what I can do to improve my health. (I've never actually dieted for health before, only to lose weight.) I'm also interested in eliminating sugar and processed foods from my kitchen ... though that will probably take a year or two, I'm a demon about pie. Today was VEGAN DAY 1 and I did pretty well. Tomorrow will be fine ... I'm just worried about dealing with Thanksgiving.

Almost!

3 pounds to go, and I meet my goal! This is exciting. I have to say that I look a lot better than I did a few months ago ... I actually have a waist again. I'm really bad at updating the exercise log, but believe me, it's getting done.

Again

OK. Now just 9 pounds to go. I hope I'll be happy when I reach my goal. I have a feeling that I'll just want to keep going.

The Solution

When I feel fat, I work out. When I feel skinny, I work out. When I've gotten stronger, I work out. When I feel myself weakening, I work out. When I gain weight, I work out. When I lose it, I work out. Let's just say: my body is the constant in my life. I depend on it to keep its feet on the ground.

Grunt

After my first week of the push-up challenge, I can do 20 consecutive push-ups without slowing down. Awesome!

Beef It UP

I have to say that I agree with whoever posted on the abs workout forum about two days of crunches being insufficient. I think that alternating the abs sequences (every other day, a total of 4 days per week) is probably the most efficient. I notice that the obliques get worked in both upper and lower abs sequences, so maybe it's smart to alternate those or combine them into the same day? Deep thoughts ... about myself.

Today I did the next sequence for the One Hundred Push-Ups Challenge (and recommended it to my moms' weight loss group, I liked it so much!). I am trying really hard not to favor my weak left wrist, but it can be hard in the longer sets of push-ups. Lots of crackling noises! Additionally, I started the Killer Abs Workout. I did the lower abs/obliques -- still trying to bounce back from my pregnancy. Man, I am feeling the burn. It's really exciting!

Tuff

T-U-F-F. With two F's. That's right. I went on a really difficult walk today, pushing the stroller, and followed it up by starting the One Hundred Push-ups Challenge. Because of a weak left wrist (broke it 2 years ago; it wasn't set properly and healed funny) I did all my push-ups in the modified position, knees on the floor. However, I was really impressed with my progress! I can do 8 push-ups smoothly with moderate/intense effort. I did 33 push-ups altogether ... and it's only my first day! I feel great about myself!

Booyah, Grandmammy!

Oh yeah ... who just lost 5 pounds?! Now, if only I could figure out exactly what I did to shed that weight. Thinking back over the past week, I think the only thing I did differently was snack less and spend a lot more time writing. Is this the new novelist diet? If so, I'm a believer.

Think About It

GOALS: use less sugar, or substitute Splenda when drinking my usual innumerable cups of tea. Also, stop using "but I'm breastfeeding" as an excuse to eat more and get outside less. It's a start!

Oy Vay

I spent the last 2 weeks with my immediate family & moving house ... so it's been an "eat your feelings" kind of month. So I'm not surprised that I gained. Tomorrow, however, is another day. Today I went on a walk and did some horrible sweaty unpacking ... I hate, hate, hate moving, even if I'm not the one doing the heavy lifting.

Walking

Heck ya it counts. Get a pedometer and see how far you are walking to get your lunch. or time yourself. Walking is great excercize and a good way to burn calories.

Walking

Do my daily walks count if, in fact, I'm walking to get lunch?

Grr

My mood has been AWFUL lately. I hope it's the post-pregnancy hormones ... in the meantime, I'm trying really hard not to reach for the brownies to make myself feel better.

Slacker, Kind Of

I was housesitting for the last week, which completely screwed my routine. I didn't exercise, and I ate whatever was at the other house. Regardless, I still managed to lose 2 pounds. Amazing. Now that I'm done with the gig, and back in my own place, I'm going to get back on the pony. Onward!

WOW

I was pretty nervous to do my weigh-in today. It's been a hard week. I feel like I've been eating lots, and not doing any exercise that isn't walking. I bought a new scale and I was dreading getting on it ... but I'm glad I did! I've lost 5 pounds!

I have committed to memory the recipe for Katherine Hepburn's brownies. This does not bode well.

Abs Day

I'm trying NOT to get into the habit of "making up" for missed exercise days by either overdoing future workouts or under-feeding myself. Today was an abs day, so I did my Pilates workout in the morning, and my new Lotte Berk DVD in the evening. In the meantime, I also walked for about an hour during the day -- mostly with the baby, who weighs a solid 15 lbs. I need to either buy a scale or find one I can use regularly. I'd like to weigh in about once a week, and I'd like my results to be pretty consistent (so no using multiple scales). I feel like I'm meeting my goals this week -- and, when I don't, I'm meeting the goal of not beating myself up.

Argh!

Today was so frustrating. I really wanted to make time for a workout, but I only had about 4 hours to myself, and I used those doing things for other people. I did get in a very brisk 45-minute walk, and I didn't overeat (which is easy for me when I'm stressed or anxious), so the day wasn't a total loss. It's hard to have zero me-time ... I need to try to make myself a priority in the future.

Weigh-In

Yesterday I went to the clinic and got my six-week checkup. I passed with flying colors, which means I can start exercising again. Yay! I am currently weighing in at 172 pounds, which is exactly 10 pounds more than I weighed pre-pregnancy. (I gained about 40 pounds during the pregnancy, and I've lost 30 in the last 6 weeks. Breastfeeding is the best diet EVER.) My goal weight is 150 pounds, and I'd like to be there by the end of the next 6 months. This is what I weighed last year, 3 months pre-pregnancy, so I know it can be done! Losing 20 pounds seems kind of daunting to me right now, but breaking it up into months isn't so bad. That's what, 3 1/2 pounds a month? I think I can do that.

6 Weeks

On the 12th, I go to my midwife to get cleared for real life again. It's weird that I have to wait so long -- I feel like, yeah, pregnancy & birth did a number on my body, but my recovery time was relatively short. And waiting this long has been frustrating. In the meantime, I've ordered a few workout DVDs with low-impact exercises to get me started. I need short, simple things to do while the baby's sleeping. Also, I haven't figured out how to do anything like cardio interval training with a stroller ... but I'm sure I will! Mostly I just want my body back. As dumb as it sounds, I miss my abs.
