Update

It is now nearly halfway through November and I still have not been able to get to the gym. It's now clear that I need to find another gym to attend. With my budget, I'm not sure how that's going to work out. I'll have to take dl's advice and start shopping around for holiday season bargains!

Getting Antsy

I'm really wishing I could be at the gym. I haven't worked out in a couple weeks now and can tell. For some reason I can just feel it in my muscles that they are demanding to be used. Kind of hard to describe. Hopefully by the end of the week my little issue will be taken care of and I can finally get back in there and lift again!

Hey, thanks for the words of encouragement, I actually got to go to the gym today and hopefully I'll still be able to carry on going now. I've found some work to tide me over so I can pay for bills, but it's working in a factory! So I may need to modify my gym workouts because otherwise if I'm training 7 days a week and lifting in a factory I'm going to do myself an injury! Have you managed to find somewhere cheap to workout yet? By the way, Hula Hoops are a type of potato chip we have here, not very good for you but got a big multipack for about 50c your money :D)

Thanks! And I didn't change the code... Honest!

Thanks for the post about the arm... I was licking my wounds and feeling sorry for myself - I'll do as you and dl have suggested. Thanks again. What a bummer about the gym! ( I promise it was not me who changed the access code...remotely...) The push-ups - I managed to download a picture of a hand positioner the Navy Seal trainer recommended and may have a go at constructing one if I cannot buy it CHEAP! I always do push-ups on my fists as my wrists were "moaning" doing it the hands way. But, the push-up handles should solve that issue...

Gym

Shop around for bargains. I don't know how it is up where you are, but here in Texas there are gyms everywhere! Most of them cost anywhere from $15-$40 a month. They usually also offer student discounts, and you can usually talk the sales rep into reducing if not eliminating the joining fee. 24hr fitness, will do this, YMCA will (sometimes). Bally's won't though (stay away from those red-shirted Nazis!).

I know how you feel!

I can't get to my gym either! I have a problem with my membership at the moment rah. I did some circuit training earlier though at home, ab work, push ups and the like.

Can't get to the gym!

I go to the gym at my fiance's apartment complex, and it takes a key code to get in. This code actually "belongs" to her roommate, as my fiance is not actually on the lease yet. Unfortunately, for some reason this code no longer works (I'm not ruling out that her roommate had it changed out of spite), so I have been unable to get in to the gym to actually work out! All I can do is push-ups and crunches at home. This may mean that I fail to meet the 1,000,000 pounds I'm shooting for in one challenge. I'm so frustrated with this!

Doing Well...

I am very impressed with the weights you're shifting. I just cannot keep up with you! Interesting what you said about the weight gain - it has taken me months to gain a 4-5lbs or so. So I understand your task may take a little longer! The push-ups - I am after the elusive 100 consecutive. I found a couple of different programs on the web, but have failed miserably to adhere to a program. The one I tried and will carry on with is by a guy who trains the Navy Seals. Let me know if you want details... I'm up to 50 or so pushups (on a good day)

Push-ups

I saw you were doing JuryDuty's push-up routine. Are you doing them everyday? or do skip on days after you do benchpress workout. I have found that the 2 days after I do my chest/tri workout I cannot do many pushups. Anyways good luck on reaching the century mark. I asked StephenB if they were working on developing challeneges for particular exercises, when they get that done we should start the inagural push-up off!

Nutrition Goals

I've been trying to gain weight. I worked out for a year and a half and put on 20 pounds of muscle, getting my body weight up to 170 lbs. I was happy with this but then for reasons involving my work on my Masters degree I stopped working out for a year. Poof, that 20 pounds were gone in a puff of smoke and I was back down to 150. Now I'm trying to get back up to 170, but it's not easy. I know it took about 20 months to put on 20 pounds so I probably shouldn't be getting frustrated yet, since I've only been working out again for 2 months, but it's easy to get discouraged. My nutrition goal is above 3000 calories a day, which is actually hard to do and not a) be really full after each meal or b) overload on carbs since they're in everything. I know I need to eat more protein (the goal is something like 190 g of protein which is ridiculous!) but it's hard to afford that much meat. My paycheck can't handle it. I'm doing the protein shake thing, but even then I'd have to have 3 or 4 a day to even get close to the goal. The difference between this time around and the last time was that last time I had a gym partner to really help push through extra reps and higher weights. Not having that this time makes it more difficult to really hurt the muscle and make it grow. I have a feeling it's going to take longer to get back up to 170 lbs, unfortunately...

Lat Pulldown

I determined that the pulldown machine (also has a compound row and seated bench press functionality) is ~20 lbs light. So when I weight 150 lbs and put it on 130 lbs, it essentially balances me out. That doesn't mean I'm going to go change everything though. Since I can't quantify the offset any more accurately than that, I'm just going to leave my weights entered as what the machine tells me, even if it's wrong. No big deal.

Gym

I'm pretty lucky, the gym I go to is only £16 ($28) a month for unlimited use. It has all the regular cardio machines i.e treadmill, xtrainer, stepper, rower, bike. Plus all the weights machines, and the pulley station. It also has a free weights room with an array of different types of weights - dumbells, barbells, kettlebells, stability ball, bosu, medicine balls. You'd never get bored there!

Machines

I've been working out at the same gym for a couple months and am getting frustrated with the machines there. It's just a small gym at my fiance's apartment complex, so there's a full machine with leg press (broken), bench press, leg curl/extension, and pec deck, with some cables for triceps and lat pulldowns too. Something is wrong with this machine though. The cables must be sticky or something, even though they say they oil them, because I know I can do more than 60 pounds on leg curls but with this machine I'm red-faced at 60 lbs. And the lat pulldown/bench press cables have to be sticky too because pulling down 100 lbs is the hardest thing I've ever done on that particular machine, but I know it's not because I'm too weak to do it. And I can only bench press 70 pounds on that machine haha. Unfortunately, aside from a set of dumbbells there are no other weight-lifting-oriented machines or anything in the gym. I do 80% of my workouts with dumbbells, but I do several workouts on this machine even though I'm not sure if the weights I'm writing down are correct. But I guess for lack of a better way of knowing what resistance I'm actually fighting, I'll just keep writing down what the machine tells me even though it's suspect. I think the next time I do lat pulldowns I'll find out what weight (according to the machine) balances my body weight and then I'll have a good conversion.

Losing Weight

Thanks for the post :D. I'm ignoring the scales because I have faith in my workout and my trainer - although I may slap him about a little if he's wrong heh heh. As for diet's like the South Beach Diet - I know from experience what not getting enough fuel does to the exercising! namely waking up flat on my back on the gym room floor after passing out in front of a room full of people and my poor trainer having to catch all 250 pounds of me (that was his workout for the day!), so I didn't lose an eye or something. Are you enjoying this months weight lifting challenge? I know I am!

Challenge

Heh thanks for starting the weight lifting challenge, I was about to do one myself because there aren't many up there for lifting. I notice I'm beating you with your goal for Lat Pulldowns, I'm on 50kg now which I believe is 104lbs but the rest, not even close. Good luck in your goals!

Periodontal surgery

I had gum surgery yesterday morning, which prevented me from working out at all. They told me not to do any strenuous activity, and the Vicodin I took for the pain really kept me on the couch all day. Today will be much of the same, since my mouth bled all night, meaning another missed workout day.

Tendinitis is doing better

I've taken to doing more leg and back workouts and not pushing it with the triceps. The tendinitis in my elbow is doing better as a result, though I'm still wary of pushing it. I'm itching to jump up to the next set of dumbbells on my bench pressing, but I'm scared of straining the tendon more. One other thing I've noticed is that my waist size is actually increasing even though my eating habits have not changed. It's possible that my 8-minute ab workouts are building muscle under the layer of fat around my midsection I guess, so I'm going to add an aerobic exercise to my daily workout to see if that helps.

First Post - Injury!

I played paintball this weekend and broke my glasses (while cleaning them, not while playing paintball), and yet despite all that running I actually gained a few pounds. I've been trying to reach 170 lbs but am finding it much more difficult to put on weight than it was last time I worked out heavily. I also must have worked out too hard or something today because I believe I have a minor case of tendinitis in my elbow. Unfortunately that will hinder my ability to do bench presses, most tricep exercises, and maybe even some bicep exercises. I'm gonna try to take it easy on the elbow for the next couple weeks, so in the meantime I can work on my legs and back. I only do legs and back once a week anyway, so this will give me a chance to improve them. Where one door closes, another opens!

Re: Progress

Thanks. I wish I could tell you I HAD made that kind of jump. I was recording my weights with dumbells (100lb). Then at the end of the month I switched to barbells. So the jump was just the switch.
